PELAV

Privacy Policy

Version 1.0 — Effective date: 30 August 2026

PELAV ("the App") is provided by Continuum Dataguard Technologies ("we," "us," "our"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use PELAV, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information

When you create a PELAV account, we collect your email address and a securely hashed password, managed through our authentication provider (Supabase). We do not store your password in plain text.

1.2 Location Information

PELAV uses your device's precise location, with your permission, to power the Maps feature, to show you fishing spots near your current position, and to fetch tide, weather, and marine condition information relevant to where you are (for example, on the home screen). You can decline location access; some features will be limited as a result. Location is only accessed while you are actively using the app — we do not track your location in the background, and your device's coordinates are not stored as part of your account or catch history. The fishing-spot locations shown on the map are a fixed, curated directory maintained by PELAV; they are not derived from, or a record of, your own location history.

The Maps feature displays map imagery using OpenStreetMap. When the map is shown, your device requests map tiles directly from OpenStreetMap's servers based on the area of the map currently in view. When the map is centered on your own position (for example, after you tap the locate-me button), this reveals your approximate location, at a resolution determined by the map's zoom level, to OpenStreetMap; your device's IP address is also visible to OpenStreetMap's servers as part of these requests, as with any direct web request. OpenStreetMap does not receive your PELAV account information and has no means of linking these tile requests to your identity.

1.3 User-Generated Content

When you log a catch, we store the information you provide, including species, location, weight, length, bait, hook, trace, notes, and the date/time of your catch. This data is linked to your account and is used to build your personal catch history. The location you log is a place name — either selected from our fishing-spot directory or entered by you — not your device's raw GPS coordinates.

1.4 Device and Diagnostic Information

PELAV uses Firebase Crashlytics to help us identify and fix crashes and technical issues. This may include your device model, operating system version, app version, and crash/error logs. This diagnostic data is not linked to your personal identity within our systems.

1.5 Marine and Weather Data

To provide weather and marine forecast information, PELAV sends your device's coordinates directly to Open-Meteo. Open-Meteo's own published terms state that it may retain webserver logs containing geographical coordinates for troubleshooting purposes, and that these log files are deleted after 90 days. Open-Meteo does not receive your PELAV account information and has no means of linking these coordinates to your identity.

To provide tide data, PELAV's backend first rounds your coordinates to an area of approximately 1.1 km before requesting tide information from WorldTides, so WorldTides never receives your exact location. PELAV's backend temporarily caches the rounded coordinates and the resulting tide data for up to approximately 12 hours to avoid repeated requests; this cache is not linked to your user account. WorldTides does not receive your PELAV account information as part of these requests.

1.6 Fishing Sessions

PELAV lets you optionally start an explicit fishing session using the Start Fishing feature. When you start a session, we store a session identifier and a start time; when you end the session, we also store an end time and a session status (active, ended, or abandoned). We store the location information and target species associated with the session in the same way described in Section 1.2 and 1.3 above — this is not your device's raw GPS coordinates — together with, where available, a snapshot of marine and weather conditions captured at the time the session starts. Any catches you log while a session is active are linked to that session.

An active fishing session does not continuously track your location or environmental conditions in the background — no additional location or environmental data is captured merely because a session remains open. When you return to the App after being away, PELAV checks whether an active session may have been left open unintentionally. If approximately 12 hours have passed since the session started, we may ask whether you are still fishing. If approximately 72 hours have passed without you returning to confirm, the session is automatically marked as abandoned. An abandoned session is not recorded or presented as a confirmed no-catch result — it only reflects that the session was left unattended for an extended period.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information described above to:

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

3. Third-Party Services

PELAV relies on the following third-party services to operate:

Service Purpose Data Involved
Supabase Authentication, database, backend services Account credentials, catch data
Firebase (Google) Crash reporting and diagnostics Device/diagnostic data (see 1.4)
Open-Meteo Weather and marine conditions Location coordinates (not linked to identity)
OpenStreetMap Map tile imagery for the Maps feature Approximate location (via map viewport) and IP address, only when the Maps feature is in use (not linked to identity)
WorldTides Tide data Rounded location coordinates (~1.1 km precision, not linked to your identity), routed through our backend

Each of these providers has its own privacy practices governing the data they process on our behalf.

4. Data Retention

We retain your account and catch data for as long as your account remains active. You can delete your PELAV account at any time using the "Delete Account" feature in your Profile. When you do, we immediately and permanently delete your account, profile, catch history, fishing sessions, and legal-consent record from our servers, and sign you out. After this server-side deletion succeeds, the App also attempts to remove your stored Digital Fishing Licence document and its details, and any related Premium status remembered on your device, from local storage. This local cleanup is a best-effort action performed by the App and is not always guaranteed to succeed. If you are unable to access the app and instead request deletion by contacting us at admin@continuumdataguardtech.co.za, we will process your verified request as soon as reasonably possible; because this is a manual process, we do not commit to a fixed number of days.

Tide and weather data fetched for your approximate area is cached on our backend for up to approximately 12 hours to improve performance. This cache is keyed to rounded location coordinates rather than your account, and expires automatically.

5. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal information, including the right to:

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at admin@continuumdataguardtech.co.za.

6. Data Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encrypted data transmission and access controls on our backend infrastructure. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Children's Privacy

PELAV is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy when changes are made. Continued use of PELAV after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
